The bands
| Code | Total yearly income | Rate on this job |
|---|---|---|
| SB | $15,600 or less | 10.5% |
| S | $15,601 – $53,500 | 17.5% |
| SH | $53,501 – $78,100 | 30% |
| ST | $78,101 – $180,000 | 33% |
| SA | Over $180,000 | 39% |
Why total income?
Your main job already uses up the lower tax brackets. A secondary code taxes every dollar of the second job at the rate of the bracket your total income reaches, so you don't end up with a tax bill at the end of the year.
Examples
- $48,000 main job + $6,000 weekend job: total $54,000, so the weekend job uses SH (30%).
- $10,000 student job + $4,000 tutoring: total $14,000, so the tutoring uses SB (10.5%).
- NZ Super + part-time job: NZ Super is your main income, so the job takes a secondary code based on your total.
Paying too much?
If the flat rate overtaxes you (for example, your total is just over a band), you can apply to IRD for a tailored tax code.
Check your own numbers. Use the tax code picker to get your code in a few taps.
