Common questions

What is the independent earner tax credit?

A tax credit of up to $520 a year ($10 a week) for New Zealanders earning between $24,000 and $70,000 who don't get Working for Families, NZ Super or a benefit.

How do I get the IETC?

Use the ME tax code (or ME SL) for your main job, and your employer pays it to you through the year. Otherwise you can claim it at the end of the tax year.

Why is my credit less than $520?

The credit drops by 13 cents for each dollar you earn over $66,000, and stops at $70,000. It's also worked out by month, so months on a benefit or Working for Families don't count.
