The ME tax code

ME gets you the independent earner tax credit each payday instead of at year-end.

What ME means

ME is the main-job code for people who qualify for the independent earner tax credit (IETC). Your employer takes slightly less tax each payday, so you get the credit through the year.

Who can use ME

Who can't

Use M instead if you or your partner get Working for Families, or you get NZ Super, a main benefit, a veteran's pension or an overseas equivalent.

Income changes during the year

The full credit only applies up to $66,000 and reduces to nothing at $70,000. If your income ends up above $70,000, switch to M with a new IR330 — otherwise you may owe tax at year-end.

Student loan?

Use ME SL. See student loan tax codes.

Check your own numbers. Use the tax code picker to get your code in a few taps.
