When to use M
Use M for your main or highest-paying job when the ME code doesn't apply — for example:
- your income is under $24,000 or over $70,000
- you or your partner get Working for Families
- you get NZ Super, a benefit or a similar pension
How M is taxed
Your employer uses the normal PAYE rates, which rise as you earn more:
| Income band | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to $15,600 | 10.5% |
| $15,601 – $53,500 | 17.5% |
| $53,501 – $78,100 | 30% |
| $78,101 – $180,000 | 33% |
| Over $180,000 | 39% |
Plus the ACC earners' levy.
Only one M at a time
You can only use M or ME for one job. Any other job takes a secondary code.
Check your own numbers. Use the tax code picker to get your code in a few taps.
